Thanks digital man,
I think we're on the right track. I've tried a couple of combinations of
methods to see what breaks. 
If I grab the file and place it in situ, it's exactly the same. If I try to
take the contents of the file and dump them in, I get a wall of text
characters. 

If I open up the file itself with something like "ee" (I'm on FreeBSD), I can
see "^[" appearing frequently before anywhere that the file in the link above
starts with "[" so it results in "^[[whatever"
