The ones that did it here initially created an account via telnet or SSH. They even left an intelligible message to the sysop. I am not sure which interface the bot used (probably the web). I changed the new user access level to a number less than the level required to access echoes. Now if they try it, they at least don't get automatic access to post beyond local areas. AFAICT, that is the only current way to fix it. I think there *might be* an add-on that uses some sort of CAPTCHA to prevent bots from creating accounts.
