There has to be moderation. The Catholic church, for instance, was unable to
accept new ideas. It inflicted death unto those who refused to believe its
version of the faith... as Christianity is (technically) set in stone though
the old literature, zealous believers did everything they could to preserve the
original structure and core ideals.

I think the core ideals of a civilisaiton should remain the same, however,
other (less important) aspects can be open to adaptation. Change everything and
you end up with chaos.
