I can understand them wanting it to be fast (and I've heard benchmarks are showing the M1 Macs are quite a bit faster than Intel Macs), but it's really nice to be able to customize the system more easily.

hmm..  It used to be you could also upgrade the memory (and storage) in the Mac Mini and the Mac laptops.  I think they're good systems, but overall I'm not really impressed with the lack of upgradeability.
