Oh theres options... you can build a 'serial modem' with hardware, that connects to a wifi connection and passes data through serial as if it WERE an old school modem.... theres this project:

Theres a 'pimodem' made from a raspberry pi zero and does the same thing...
these are better ways of doing so, without using old hardware...
