Anyone can solve a probem by throwing money at it.  :)

When I discovered Lubuntu and got rid of XP on my single-core T43, I was 
pleasantly surprised and got a couple of years more life. A cheap PATA SSD 
gave it a few more years, and I ended up using the same laptop for over 10 
years (after it was already obsolete)
