Yes, CFLs and LEDs are great for that. I have one table lamp I like to leave 
on as a night light, it lights up a stairway and the upper floor, so if you 
get up for a drink of water, you can see your way to the kitchen.

It's nice having a 5w LED bulb there instead of a 100w incandescent bulb.
