  The General Class license is the one that most hams operating HF,
hold.

  Except for 500 kilohertz of spectrum on 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters, 
you have full amateur privileges with a General Class license...far 
more than what the Technician Class license offers.

  There are 5 reasons one might want to upgrade to Amateur Extra,
the top of the line, as follows:

1) Full amateur radio privileges, although you still have to stay
at least 500 kilohertz away from the band edges on HF, to avoid
going out of band.

2) Access to the 2x1 or 1x2 callsigns...IF you're LUCKY enough to
get one...you may have to settle for a 2x2 callsign.

3) With a CEPT license in traveling overseas, you have full amateur
privileges.

4) As a Volunteer Examiner (VE), you can give and grade ALL of the
exams (Technician, General, and Amateur Extra), and NOT just the
Technician Class exam.

5) Snob appeal (hi hi).

  While I had to upgrade to Amateur Extra to be a VE Team Leader,
when I'm on the air, I stay in the Technician Class bands, as I
enjoy them.
