I've unfortunately had a bit of experience with fighting and being assaulted,
and I can tell you that there is no way to predict how a "fight" is going to
play out.  If you choose to engage with someone they could easily knock the
weapon out of your hand and strangle you... or beat you to death with it.

This is the reason why the police carry things that keep attackers out of range
..  Even the old school stuff like billy clubs was designed to extend reach and
give them a serious advantage over an attacker.

If someone breaks into my house, they will be given an opportunity to leave
before I do anything to them.  If they don't use it, well...
