Adding characters just to tick boxes doesn't really add anything to movies
and TV shows.  There are a whole lot of shows with "dumb secondary white
male character" where that character could disappear and you'd never
notice.  But, at least for several years in the 1980s-90s, that was a box
that every show seemed to tick.
