It fell short because there was no way to do the story in a 2 hour movie.

I remember reading about the movie being made and it should have been 6 hours
long - and even then, it wouldn't get most of the story.

I agree with your "falling short" assessment.  You can't tell a 12 hour story
in 2 hours.  It just won't work.
