I think you hit the target as to why the first one was so bad.

You simply cannot do justice to Dune with a single movie.  It just won't work.

I do remember watching parts of a Dune miniseries (SciFi channel, I think) many
years ago that did much better.  (But I moved and didn't have access to that
channel to keep watching.)
