I wonder if a web proxy would help these days with SSL everywhere.

My son started living with us fulltime, and October was the first month that 
we went over our bandwidth cap - 1229gb/month. He downloaded a couple of 
games from Steam and was basing the bandwidth use on the installer - not all 
of the textures that download afterwards.

What didn't help was moving my home network from a 20 mbps powerline network 
to gigabit ethernet. :)
