Most of the time they take a movie that was good and remake it because they think they can improve it. They fail more often than not. If you take a masterpiece (say, the original Robocop) and try to make a new version, it is very hard for you to make one that is _better_. And you can cast a black Robocop for the remake, but it does not change the fact that you are competing against a masterpiece and chances are you will fall short.
