Europe Ar> has, at best, a mixed bag with assimilatin > populations; there is an uneven melting pot. Case in point: France, though be Ar> ing complicit as an Imperial power in Africa (see, especially, Ar> Algeria), has imposed cultural and legal restricti > on immigrants (such as the headscarf ban, schooling mandates) without also pr Ar> oviding them with economic assistance and opportunity (such as language Ar> and skills training) that it has, in the > case of Marseilles, created a parallel society of un-integrated foreigners wh Ar> o are French-people in waiting. Ar> The areas with the most Moroccans tend to be the areas where people Ar> votes the most for parties with anti-immigration programs. This alone Ar> suggests integration is not going that well. The Barcelona area is Ar> turning to Detroit-lite because ethnic gangs have started mugging Ar> people in broad daylight after they started soaking immigrants in Ar> without a plan as to what to do with them. Ar> Meanwhile, areas with Russian immigrants don't have anti-Russian Ar> parties claiming for them to be kicked out despite the fact many of Ar> those Russians are NOT trying to integrate (living in Russian Ar> neighbourhoods and villages, to the point you would say some towns are Ar> Russian). Ar> I personally think integration is overhyped. What a lot of people seems Ar> to want from immigrants is to come in, forget their culture and adopt Ar> the local customes. I think that for a lot of groups that is just not Ar> going to happen. In fact, wanting that to happen is anti-diverse (ie. Ar> if you want to import Moroccans and strip their culture away from them Ar> so they are just Spaniards you are a modern day colonialist imposing Ar> your culture on others). Ar> The ironic thing is that many African immigrants come with ideas that Ar> are unnaceptable by Spanish standards, such as partaking in genital Ar> mutilation. In order for them to fit in you have to engineer them and Ar> turn them into something they are currently not. Ar> On the other hand, I cannot think of clear examples that made Irish, Ar> Italian and Polish immigrants unnaceptable to American Standards. Ar> Meanwhile, a Spaniard would not be an acceptable immigrant for Saudi Ar> Arabia because the first thing a Spaniard would do is try to produce Ar> beer in some cellar, which for Arab authorities is a very unacceptable Ar> breach of social manners. In fact they tend to confine Spaniards into Ar> special camps over there. Ar> My point is that some cultures and worldwiews are compatible and others Ar> are not. It is easy to brag that your nation is importing Italians Ar> successfully without issues when Italians are similar to your own Ar> culture. However, if you want to get people impressed you will have to Ar> import people with very divergent values (such as cultures who partake Ar> in arranged marriages, imposed class systems, feudal policies, ritual Ar> mutilation and so on). I bet you won't be able to, and if you do, it Ar> would be by turning those people into something else... Even then, when cultures are similar, the people are similar, it often fails. Take Yugoslavia for example. History is littered with ethnic conflict. Proximity and diversity leads to conflict. Our "leaders" are creating future conflict, just so some companies can use cheap labour. --- MultiMail/Linux v0.52 þ Synchronet þ MS & RD BBs - bbs.mozysswamp.org .
