I think that vanity played a lot. A kid wouldn't want to be seen with something else; it was a status thing. But the other aspect was simplicity, I guess. Where we are all a bunch of geeks familiar with tech, we can rip, recode, format, and copy stuff in our sleep. But for most people, it's not the case. I guess that close-up platform brought simplicity and a clear path to do things; it's the only path but a path that will work. How many of you set up players for relatives and friends?
