Actually, I have a lot of trouble coming up with time to tend a harvest, so I
have started using opaque plastic sheets to cover the ground and prevent weeds
from eating the harvest away.

Basically, I place the sheets on the ground and make holes through them. Then I
plant the tomatoes and their friends through the holes. Since the growth of
weeds is drastically cut off, it removes a lot of work. THe bad news is a lot
of plants won't do it with such setup (such as potatoes).
