Indeed, and if the lands are large enough, you can likely harvest some
tasty critters as well.

Yes, and of course you can use animals such as horses (as you well
know) to do plowing/hauling work also, and they get their fuel from
the land they are working.  :-)

I don't really garden much these days, because I don't have to and 
don't have the "spare" time for it, but I could if needed.  Definitely
a good skill/knowledge to have.
