Isn't that how many elections are ran worldwide?

People voting for candidates they dislike because they want to keep the other
candidate away, no matter the cost?

IMO I think more people voted for Trump because they liked Trump than voted
for, say Pedro S nchez because they liked Pedro S nchez.
