I'd get a kernel update, the system would reboot for whatever reason (power loss, usually), and it would fail to launch my VMs, a lot of them with BBSes or whatnot. ChatGPT actually came up with a solution to fix that so that if a newer kernel was installed (like say, with unattended upgrades on an unmonitored machine) and when next you reboot it would automatically run the update for VMware and then your VMs could launch.
