While not nearly as dark as the first movie, I thought T2 had some tense
moments and an interesting tone overall that the later movies lacked. I think
a lot of the problem is that the suspense of, for example, the opening chase
with the T800 chasing John, is a lot weaker with subsequent watches. The
first time I saw it (as a kid, going in blind) I found a lot of that stuff to
be really effective. When I watch it these days, it mostly feels like a
straight up action movie to me.
