Actually, yeah, that's a pretty good take on what made The Terminator good:
It was a horror flick masquerading as a science fiction / action film. The
sequels just became simple action movies. No horror. No suspense. Just
explosions. Fake and gay. Still, T2 did at least give us that great dream
sequence where LA gets nuked and Sarah watches herself get burned to ashes
and blown away by the blast. A for effort on that part at least.

Yeah, that's because of Paul Verhoeven. His signature style was all over the
first film, but he got replaced in the sequel. He's the guy who put in all
the over-the-top, almost mockumentary-like elements in Starship Troopers as
well. Oh, and Total Recall. Can't forget that one. He was all over some of
the best 80's science fiction / action flicks.
