I did both simultaniously, also starting in '86.  That's when I got my first PC
clone and modem (2400 baud, I think).  I went a little online crazy for a bit, signing up with AOHell, Plodigy ('cuz it was so slow) and Compu$erve.  And then there were the boards; oh so many boards.  On weekends I'd be up to three-four in the morning.  I quickly realized I didn't need the paid services.  The BBSes had more than enough goodies to keep my busy, so I dropped them after a couple months.

Good time...Gooood times.  :)
