When I was around eight or nine, I used to check out chess books from the library.  I didn't know how to play, but for some reason I was facinated by the game.  I had one of those checkers/chess boards and I taught myself how to play using that.  Many years later, I taught my Bro-inlaw how to play and he proceeded to kick my butt in almost every game.  I decided that chess just wasn't my game, so I switched to backgammon, which I excelled at and enjoyed a lot more, even when I lost.
