Even in the 90's we had email clients. :)  Can you not use an ssh client
to connect to a free shell like sdf.org or something?  From there you could
use pine or alpine for email.

The last email client I wrote was a BBS door and it was so long ago email
didn't have encryption. LOL  So I do know with the correct terminal you
should be able to read / write email using nothing but telnet.

I use Magiterm for BBS telnet / ssh.
