Were?  It seems like keyboard-free devices are the thing right now..  I haven't
seen a smartphone with a physical keyboard for a long time.  Even before I had
my LG Optimus Slider, there weren't many smartphones I saw that had a physical
keyboard.  So I'm not sure most manufacturers are eliminating a part..

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say it's a scam..  I suppose many people
probably wouldn't care about having a physical keyboard, so the phone
manufacturers are saving money by not including a physical keyboard and the
associated mechanisms to include one on their phones.
