2025-01-30 -- life heuristics ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On 2025-01-26, I had to make a decision -- to "fell" it like a tree, as we say in German -- and found it super hard. It's easier when you have a guideline to hold on to. Here are two conflicting ones. Hell yeah or no -- from a blog post and book by Derek Sivers [1]. The idea is to default to no, so that you won't have an excuse when the good stuff comes knocking. Don't swallow all that is proposed to you as if the weather depends on it; you might choke. Heed Bo Burnham's warning of the messy burrito. And Thoreau's: "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!" Live for the story -- from a list of life tips on 9gag, from 2015 or so. When in doubt, err on the side of whatever would make for the better story. If it turns bad, you have a story to tell and laugh about [2]. If it turns good, you will have an adventure to live -- which will enrich your life and make you more interesting.
