A few memories about Icelandic songs. Written on the 6th of October, 2025. I remember how I sat in the public library of Ulm, the big glass pyramid, in September of 2018, reading through a grammar of Icelandic, because my friends and I, with whom I had just been on a trip to London in August of 2018, were planning on taking our next trip to Iceland in the summer of 2019. We ended up going to Vienna in September of 2019, because I had been too busy dropping out of my law studies in 2019 to organize the trip. Anyway, during that month of September of 2018, I discovered two nice Icelandic songs, namely "Fyrir fáeinum sumrum" by Friðrik Dór, a romantic song on the guitar, and "Fullir vasar" by Aron Can, a rap song in 4/4 with a jazz intro in 3/4. The first Icelandic song I knew though was "Hvað með það?" by Daði Freyr. Apparently I had already discovered it in March of 2017, but I listened to it heavily during my Icelandic studies and trip preparations in 2018. In July of 2020, then living in Konstanz, I discovered "Think about things" by the same band, but the song is in English. During the Eurovision Song Contest of 2019, in May of 2019, which I watched at the Marstall cafeteria in Heidelberg, I discovered "Hatrið mun sigra" by Hatari. I later looked up more songs by the band, including "Ódýr". In March of 2017, I also discovered "Neinei" by Áttan and probably other songs as well, but they haven't had such a lasting impact on me as the other songs.
