Pilate

Pilate in "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973):

Pilate is the only person other than Jesus and Mary whom the Creed
mentions by name. No other names occur, not even Judas or Peter.

Pilate, a Roman bureaucrat, is the link between salvation history and
secular history. Quod non est in actis, non est in mundo.

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote that Pilate is the "only honorable" figure in
the New Testament because he said the "only valuable" thing in the book:
"What is truth?"

Jesting Pilate pulls out the Platonic rug from underneath Christianity.
If there are no ideas, if only matter exists, then there is no Heaven.
And if there are metaphysics, but they cannot say yes to one thing and
say no to another, then there is no Gate.

The question is a mirror.

It is the skepticism that replaces an objective and universal morality
with relativism. It is the disenchantment that replaces the community of
faith with a spirituality of self-improvement.
