Oh okay... I hope that at least with a local installation (Linux,  
Windows, Mac desktop app or mobile app) it is usable at such a low  
speed. You don't have to use an online version...

That might be true, but you also have to know people who are also  
using it. And the 'market' for messenger services is very fragmented,  
so using yet another one is -at least for me- not an option at the  
moment.
If I ever find some spare time, I will use MRC or IRC :)
