It is fairly light compared to others and supports OpenBSD.

However there seemed to be a few issues with sound jittering and some strange warnings coming up in the terminal when running it. Since I know very little about audio and video it was mostly trial and error until the problems were fixed. This is a quick overview of my journey.

My first naive attempt was the following:

ffmpeg -y \ -f x11grab -i :0 \ -f sndio -i snd/0 \ -codec:v libx264 \ -codec:a libmp3lame \ raw.mp4

It kind of worked but resulted in a number of warnings that caused some side effects such as that juddering sound and even some decoding warnings when playing it via mplayer or vlc. The unique warnings were as follows:

[mp4 @ 0x4052c4e2800] Non-monotonous DTS in output stream 0:1; previous: 318601, current: 318407; changing to 318602. This may result in incorrect timestamps in the output file.

[libmp3lame @ 0x4060376f000] Queue input is backward in time

[x11grab @ 0x40540033000] Thread message queue blocking; consider raising the thread_queue_size option (current value: 8)

[sndio @ 0x152d730d1000] Thread message queue blocking; consider raising the thread_queue_size option (current value: 8)

[x11grab @ 0x558225bc29a0] Stream #0: not enough frames to estimate rate; consider increasing probesize

(Quite amusing that I pretty much got a warning for every single parameter I entered! Annoying haha)

So for the first two warnings, it seems that all I needed to do was add
-crf 0
(Constant Rate Factor) to prevent processing of video whilst recording. This yields a fairly large file but I can then encode that post-recording and it can take as long as it wants. My command now looks like this:

ffmpeg -y \ -f x11grab -i :0 \ -f sndio -i snd/0 \ -codec:v libx264 -crf 0 \ -codec:a libmp3lame \ raw.mp4

The third and forth warnings are similar to one another so as suggested I increase the thread queue size on each (to 32) via
-thread_queue_size 32
. Ffmpeg is weird in that the argument needs to come before the input parameter (-i). So in this case I need to duplicate it once for each. The latest version of the command is:

ffmpeg -y \ -f x11grab -thread_queue_size 32 -i :0 \ -f sndio -thread_queue_size 32 -i snd/0 \ -codec:v libx264 -crf 0 \ -codec:a libmp3lame \ raw.mp4

And a few other "things" I have found upon the way. The first one is that I should use
libx264rgb
if I want a more raw encoding of the video. Apparently otherwise this is slightly lossy due to the color conversion. Even though this is now lossless, we need to instruct how much resources are delegated to efficient encoding. I used
-preset ultrafast
because I want the best performance I can get (at the cost of less efficient use of hard disk space). I can also use
pcm_s16le
for the audio to store it internally as some sort of rawish wav stream (I can also remove the -crf for audio because it makes no sense with raw streams). In this case I need my container to be mkv because the mp4 container doesn't support this. At this point we also increase the probesize to silence the final warning. So my new command could look something like this.

ffmpeg -y \ -f x11grab -probesize 32M -thread_queue_size 32 -i :0 \ -f sndio -thread_queue_size 32 -i snd/0 \ -codec:v libx264rgb -crf 0 -preset ultrafast \ -codec:a pcm_s16le \ raw.mkv

So once I have this, I can make my recordings and sample them. Once I am happy with it I can then use ffmpeg to encode it as usual without running into these (performance related?) issues. I.e Something like this.

ffmpeg -y \ -i raw.mp4 \ -codec:v libx264 \ -codec:a libmp3lame \ output.mp4

And finally, it seems that Firefox doesn't support the default encoding of yuv 4:4:4 or something. It only supports yuv 4:2:0. This can be solved by using
-vf format=yuv420p
. So the final processing command is:

ffmpeg -y \ -i raw.mp4 \ -codec:v libx264 -vf format=yuv420p \ -codec:a libmp3lame \ output.mp4

I have no clue what most of this stuff means. I just wanted to record some programming videos. Ffmpeg is a little poorly documented for how complex it is. Hopefully it helps someone.

   submitted by /u/pedersenk
[link] [comments]

Solved a few issues recording sound / audio using ffmpeg and thought I would share

Does anyone have experience with using OpenBSD to route at that speed? If any hostname.if(5) files contain “dhcp” directives, IPv4 entries in /etc/mygate will be ignored. If they contain “autoconf” directives, IPv6 entries will be ignored.

Looks like hard-coding a default gateway address won't work either.

BUT... the new output of netstat -rn is:

Internet6: Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Mtu Prio Iface default fe80::4a1d:70ff:fed2:ffae%bge0 UGS 0 20 - 8 bge0

and that link-local address is pingable, so maybe getting warmer here. At least now I can ping the gateway. The next step might be to try again with dhcpcd (no autoconf in /etc/hostname.bge0) for the prefix and putting that gateway address in /etc/mygate, complete with the %bge0 notation at the end.

By all accounts, it should work just with autoconf, right?
