137
Fault that triggered 7.0 earthquake off California not known to produce sizable tsunamis

138
139
Seismologists say the Mendocino fault zone is not known to produce significant tsunamis because strike-slip faults involve horizontal motion, rather than a vertical, which displaces more water. Earthquakes are rather common in the Mendocino triple junction region.

140
141
142

The fault zone responsible for Thursday's 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of California is not known to produce large tsunamis, but due to the size of the event, NOAA’s Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for more than 4 million residents along the West Coast of the U.S.

The Mendocino Fault Zone, the region responsible for the quake, is home to strike-slip faults, which involve horizontal motion rather than vertical displacement that would typically move larger amounts of water. The United States Geological Survey says there have been at least 40 other earthquakes of a magnitude 6.0 or larger in the region during the last 100 years.

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake did produce a small tsunami, but it measured less than two inches in height, according to initial data.

The small rise in water did not cause any reported damage and was significantly smaller than the tsunami generated by the 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption, which saw several feet of water impacting parts of the California coastline, ripping boats from their moorings and damaging docks.

In contrast, the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which extends from northern California to southern British Columbia, has a greater potential to produce a large tsunami, experts warn.

This is because a tectonic plate is forced under another, displacing massive amounts of water and triggering a potential powerful tsunami during the vertical motion.

A 9.0 quake in 1700 in the subduction zone sent a devastating tsunami along the West Coast and even across the Pacific to Japan.

9.0 QUAKE ROCKED PACIFIC COAST 324 YEARS AGO AND SENT ‘ORPHAN TSUNAMI’ TO JAPAN

TSUNAMI THREAT ENDS FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, OREGON COAST AFTER MAJOR 7.0 EARTHQUAKE

So why were warnings issued for the 7.0 earthquake, even though a sizable tsunami was unlikely?

Seismologists explained that the decision to issue warnings was based on the data available at the time.

Thursday’s quake was significant and occurred close to the coastline, leaving little room for error and scant time to react.

At the time of the warning’s issuance, there was no data to confirm whether a tsunami was on its way, so alerts remained in effect until observations determined there was not a larger threat.

Past events, such as the 9.0 earthquake in Japan in 2011 and the 2022 Tonga eruption, were thousands of miles away, providing valuable time for officials to assess the situation and issue the necessary alerts to warn those along the West Coast about potential water rise.

Had there been a sizable tsunami during Thursday's event, it would have reached the coastline in just minutes, unlike larger events in the Pacific Basin, which typically take 8 to 12 hours to reach the coast.

7 FACTS ABOUT EARTHQUAKES

Some seismologists considered the event as a good test to help discover shortfalls in residents’ preparations and responses to a major event.

Some websites that house important information regarding tsunamis and evacuation zones were down in the immediate aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake – a likely casualty from the flood of people seeking advice.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency for three Northern California counties but only isolated damage was reported as of Thursday evening.

"Today’s emergency proclamation will allow more resources to go where needed for emergency response to this morning’s earthquake," Newsom said in a statement. "I am grateful for the robust system our state has in place that worked as intended today and kept people safe and informed."

238

Human's return to the Moon will wait another year, NASA leadership announced on Thursday, after an investigation into their lunar spacecraft found some issues following its first uncrewed trip around the Moon two years ago.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the Orion spacecraft heat shield underwent extensive testing after the 2022 Artemis 1 flight around the Moon to understand the risks to astronauts.

NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy said Orion's shield "wore away differently than expected" upon the skip re-entry, the maneuver used to slow the spacecraft down as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere at speeds 32 times the speed of sound and experiences 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures.

While the capsule was dipping in and out of Earth’s atmosphere, heat built up a layer of char on the outside of the vehicle, which began cracking in an uneven shedding of that outer layer. While the heat shield is expected to char, engineers were concerned because the charring material began coming off the vehicle.

After more than 100 tests across the country to understand the issue, Nelson said the U.S. space agency is moving forward with Orion and its Space Launch System but with some changes, including pushing back the first astronaut flights by at least a year.

NASA is targeting 2026 for the Artemis II, the first launch of Orion around the Moon with an American-Canadian astronaut crew. Nelson said the first Moon landing with astronauts is targeted for mid-2027 if SpaceX's Starship is ready for the Artemis III mission.

The Artemis missions will also fly under modified trajectories and re-entry to lessen the heat coming back into Earth's atmosphere.

SpaceX was awarded the first human Moon lander contract to land astronauts on the Moon using its Starship spacecraft, currently undergoing test launches in Texas. The company recently completed its sixth successful test.

The space agency said that had astronauts been onboard the Orion spacecraft, they would have been "safe," and the temperature would have remained "comfortable."

The Space Launch System rocket for the Artemis II mission is currently being stacked at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida where it will be integrated with the Orion spacecraft.

The strongest Ridgecrest quake was estimated at a magnitude of 7.1 and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Seismologists expect aftershocks from the most recent event could potentially last for weeks, if not longer, but the chances of a quake surpassing the magnitude of a 7.0 are now considered low.

387

PAID CONTENT

This content is provided by our sponsor, Realtor.com, which has shared ownership with FOX News Media. FOX Weather editorial was not involved in the creation of this content.

Mortgage rates will continue to average above 6% next year, and home prices will keep rising, the Realtor.com® economic research team predicts in its new 2025 housing forecast.

The report forecasts that mortgage rates will average 6.3% across 2025 and end the year at 6.2%. That’s a leg down from the 6.7% average expected across 2024 by year-end, but still well above the 4% historical average recorded from 2013 to 2019.

Home prices will grow an additional 3.7% through next year, after rising 4% this year and 1.1% in 2023, the forecast indicates. Sales of previously owned homes are projected to tick up to 4.07 million, a 1.5% gain from this year, but still sluggish compared with the 2013–19 historical average of 5.28 million.

The supply of homes for sale, a persistent challenge for homebuyers in recent years, will continue to improve, rising 11.7% across 2025, the forecast predicts. New-home construction will also continue to expand, jumping 13.8% from 2024 to 1.1 million new units started next year, according to the forecast.

"This past year brought us a surprising upward trend in home price growth despite the persistence of high mortgage rates and rising inventory," Realtor.com economists wrote. "Mortgage rates are expected to keep mortgage payments essentially unchanged in 2025 despite continued home price growth."

The outlook for prospective homebuyers is mixed, with the forecast projecting that mortgage rates will remain elevated, even as other buyer-friendly elements take shape in the housing market.

"Homebuyers hoping for a lasting return of September’s near-6% mortgage rates will likely be disappointed," the report states, projecting rates will average 6.3% through 2025. "There will be volatility around this average, so shoppers may catch a lucky break, but our advice is to plan and budget for the mid-6% range."

As measured by the typical share of income spent on home payments, affordability remains near record lows.

The forecast projects slight improvements in affordability in 2025, but any gains will likely come from growing wages or increased disposable income from tax breaks, rather than falling home prices.

On the upside, the report notes recent shifts that favor buyers, such as a growing supply of homes for sale and an increase in the number of listings with price reductions.

The supply of homes on the market has recently grown to levels not seen since December 2019, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. And roughly 20% of listings are now seeing price reductions, signaling a market tipping more in favor of buyers.

In October, major markets with at least half of active listings featuring price reductions included Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, and Indianapolis. The top 10 markets for the share of listings with price cuts were located in either Ohio, Indiana, or Illinois—led by Urbana, OH, with a price reduction rate of 71%.

The forecast notes that, altogether, buyers should expect a friendlier, less competitive housing market than in past years, although one that remains costly due to still-high mortgage rates and home prices.

"While more inventory means buyers will likely have more time to make purchase decisions in 2025, in any market, a fast-acting buyer will have a higher likelihood of making the winning offer," says Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale. "For this reason, it’s wise to get prepared financially and for the home search overall."

The forecast projects that lingering constraints on supply inventory and strong demand, especially in desirable locations, could give sellers the upper hand in price negotiations in certain areas.

The latest Realtor.com market hotness report for October indicated that many of the top markets for buyer demand were located in the Northeast and Midwest—led by Manchester, NH, for the 10th month in a row.

"As noted above, the market is shifting from a strong seller’s market to one in which buyers and sellers have more balanced market power," the forecast report says. "As a result, sellers will need to price carefully to attract buyers, especially in markets where affordability is an issue."

The report recommends that flexible selling strategies, such as offering incentives to buyers, could help sellers stand out in a more competitive market.

"While there’s potential for a favorable market for sellers, the overall landscape will depend largely on how economic conditions, interest rates, and housing supply evolve over the first few months of the year," the report states.

The new forecast projects that asking rents will drop slightly by 0.1% in 2025, after growing 1.2% in 2023 and dipping 0.2% this year.

Rent growth remains soft compared with the average annual increase of 5.2% seen from 2013 through 2019. That’s mainly due to the influx of new multifamily housing units constructed in recent years, alleviating supply issues in some cities.

"While the rental vacancy rate is at its highest level since the start of the pandemic, it remains somewhat below the 7.2% average seen from 2013 to 2019. Looking ahead, a robust multifamily construction pipeline is expected to continue driving rental supply growth in 2025, which is likely to push the vacancy rate back toward its long-term average," the report states.

"Looking ahead to 2025, recent construction trends suggest all four regions will see continued growth in rental stocks, with the South leading at an annual increase rate of 1.5%, followed by the West (1.2%), Midwest (0.9%), and Northeast (0.7%)," the authors add. "Thus, it’s likely that Southern rental markets will maintain a relative affordability advantage in 2025."

419
Tsunami threat ends for Northern California, Oregon coasts after major 7.0 earthquake

421
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake off the coast of Northern California has prompted a rare tsunami warning for coastal areas near the California-Oregon state line, including San Francisco Bay.

424

SAN FRANCISCO – A magnitude 7.0 earthquake off the coast of Northern California prompted a rare tsunami warning for coastal areas near the California-Oregon state line, including San Francisco Bay.

A powerful 7.0 earthquake was recorded around 10:44 a.m. PT about 60 miles offshore of Ferndale, California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 7.0 quake is the strongest in the region since at least 2005, when a magnitude of 7.2 occurred, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

The major quake promoted a Tsunami Warning from Davenport to 10 miles south of Florence, Oregon. The warning included more than 4.6 million people and was allowed to expire just before 11 a.m.

A Tsunami Warning means that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring.

A tsunami is a series of long waves caused by significant disruptions in the ocean, most commonly earthquakes along tectonic plate boundaries.

HUNDREDS OF CALIFORNIA BOATERS MOVE VESSELS OUT TO SEA DURING TSUNAMI THREAT

San Diego State University Geologist Pat Abbott said even a small tsunami wave can do serious damage.

"You go to the beach and you see a wave rise up, break, runs up the beach and pulls back," Abbott said. "But that's not the way a tsunami is. A tsunami is not a solitary wave. It's the front of a big sheet of water coming in. So if it's even coming in knee-depth, then you can't stand up and it's going to carry you, you know, 100 feet, 1,000 feet, a quarter of a mile. And it could be beating you up with three branches and things at the same time."

Shaking from the major earthquake was felt in Napa Valley and across San Francisco.

Officials in West Berkley issued evacuation orders for the tsunami zone west of 7th Street.

Emergency management in San Francisco warned residents, "You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters."

Bay Area Rapid Transportation (BART) temporarily closed Transbay Tube after the earthquake. Trains began running again before 11 a.m. PT.

Abbott said it was important the NWS issued the Tsunami Warning quickly.

WATCH: MAJOR EARTHQUAKE OFF WEST COAST CAUSES SHAKING IN CALIFORNIA, OREGON

"It's best to give people time. We don't want to give fake warnings, you know, warning that there's nothing behind this kind of thing. You don't want people to lose faith in the system," he said. "But this one, it needed to go out."

The USGS does expect more aftershocks. According to the USGS Aftershock forecast, "there is a more than 99% chance of magnitude 3 and above aftershocks within the next week, and it is most likely that 3 to 280 of these will occur."

Those aftershocks should decrease in intensity and frequency over time. Geologists said several dozen aftershocks have already occurred; the largest measuring a 4.7 just two minutes after the original quake. The vast majority of aftershocks have been measured under magnitude 4.0.

There is a small chance of aftershocks being stronger than the initial 7.0 earthquake.

The USGS originally reported that a magnitude 5.8 quake struck Cobb, California, three minutes after the 7.0 quake but later updated its data to reduce that quake to a magnitude 4.1.

534

A unique view of sharks using teamwork to hunt took the top prize in The Royal Society’s annual photography competition.

The Royal Society, a scientific academy and fellowship of scientists around the world, announced the winner of this year’s photography competition among scientists. This year, the organization asked for images representing different areas of science, including astronomy, behavior, Earth science and climatology, ecology and environmental science and microimaging.

The winning image was submitted by Angela Albi using a drone piloted by August Paula. The stunning photo shows blacktip sharks working as a group near the Maldives to hunt a school of fish. In the aerial view, four sharks cut a path through the school of fish, gathering their prey for feeding.

Albi studies interactions between blacktip reef sharks and baitfish schools, using drones to capture these interactions from above.

"One of the main reasons animals group together is to avoid predators. In this case, a large school of hardyhead silversides faces four juvenile blacktip reef sharks, which occasionally attack, causing the fish to respond collectively," Albi said. "Blacktip reef sharks are a social species and as juveniles, they often gather in schools of fish near the shore in the Maldives, where they circle within the school."

The photo was taken from drone footage and processed for contrast, exposure and white balance.

The 2024 winner of the astronomy category took more than 14 hours over three days to capture. According to the winning photographer, Imran Sultan, the image shows two nebulae found in the Cassiopeia constellation that form a "Heart and Soul."

Jose Manuel Martinez Lopez won the microimaging category with his submission, "Tired Eyes." The eyes below are those of a scorpion seen in fluorescence under a microscope. The final image was created by stacking 110 images and shows an area of 1.4 x 1.05 millimeters (0.05 x 0.04 inches).

Melting ice in Greenland took the top prize in the Earth science and climatology category. The image by David Garcia shows a supraglacial melting lake over the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the second-largest ice mass on Earth.

Garcia said the photo was taken during a flight over the ice sheet when a "small window of light appeared."

"It was singular due to hundreds of small aquamarine structures formed by melting and thawing process," Garcia said. "Although some clouds cast shadows over the lake, I was elated to have captured the image."

587

MILWAUKEE – A rare snow squall passed through Milwaukee on Wednesday afternoon.

The wind-driven snow was caught in a timelapse video by FOX 6 Milwaukee Chief Meteorologist Tom Wachs, as it passed by the FOX 6 studios.

Snow squalls move in and out of areas quickly, and are common wintertime hazards, according to the National Weather Service. They create whiteout conditions and bring in gusty winds that limit visibility and create icy roads as temperatures decrease.

Reports near Milwaukee showed wind gusts of up to 56 mph. In Slinger, Wisconsin, slightly northwest of Milwaukee, visibility fell to around 600 feet during the snow squall.

WHAT ARE SNOW SQUALLS AND WHY ARE THEY SO DANGEROUS?

The video captured the squall moving over the city, blocking visibility in a white haze. After it disappears, a dusting of snow is seen on the roofs of buildings.

If a Snow Squall Warning is issued for your immediate area, the NWS recommends you avoid travel. If you are already on the road when a snow squall comes through, reduce your speed, turn on your headlights and hazard lights and allow ample space between you and other vehicles.

642

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Fla. – A video shot in Everglades National Park shows an alligator dragging perhaps one of the longest Burmese pythons to have been seen in the area.

The alligator and its catch were spotted from a distance, and yet the carnage was quite evident.

In its mouth, the alligator clutches the dead, bloated and partially eaten python as it effortlessly swims through the water despite the python dwarfing the alligator.

The alligator and its catch were spotted by Everglades tour guide Kelly Alvarez, who noted the impressive size of the dead python.

"The record for longest python found in the Florida Everglades is 19 feet," she said. "Given that this alligator is minimum 10 feet, though I estimate him to be more around 12 feet, this python being twice his size is now quite possibly the longest Burmese python ever found in Everglades National Park."

Burmese pythons are some of the largest snakes on the planet, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The largest Burmese python found in the Sunshine State was more than 18 feet long.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

The pythons are an invasive species originating from southeast Asia, so they have few natural predators in Florida.

Jupiter will be at its brightest all year because it’s in opposition with the Sun, and Earth in between. The gas giant will appear bright all month long.

In 2020, the Jupiter and Saturn conjunction was also dubbed the "Christmas Star" when the planets appeared just a tenth of a degree apart, looking like a single bright object. "Eventually, it will slow down, but it's getting worse."

Officials estimated more than 8,000 jobs were lost in the Asheville metro from September to October, highlighting the scope of the devastation as businesses struggle to recover.

Tourism is a vital part of the region's economy, but it suffered a significant hit after the historic storm.

Most of the job losses were reported to be from the leisure and hospitality sectors, which are expected to take a long time to recover.

"It's a major part of their economy, and it's not coming back right away," Martin explained. "Businesses are damaged, roads are taken out, and people are wondering what they're coming back to."

Annual events like leaf-peeping and Christmas tree picking have been largely off-limits, as the infrastructure in many areas is too damaged to safely accommodate the usual crowds.

HURRICANE HELENE STILL DISRUPTING SOME SHIPPING SERVICES AS HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHES

The real estate market is also said to be struggling, with analysts estimating home sales down around 30% compared to the same time period in 2023.

Despite the challenges, Martin remains cautiously optimistic that a full recovery will take place, though the timeframe remains uncertain.

"Things will rebuild. Things will get back together," said Martin.

Businesses and residents affected by the weather are eligible for a low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Additional aid packages are being debated in the state legislature, but relief likely won't reach the hardest-hit areas until well into 2025.

961

The final full moon of 2024, known as the Cold Moon, will rise in mid-December, lighting up the night sky.

December's full moon is known as the Cold Moon or the Long Night Moon because it occurs during the longest periods of darkness of the year, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Dec. 21, the shortest day of the year, marks the winter solstice or the start of astronomical winter. But if you ask any meteorologist, winter began on Dec. 1.

The Moon will appear fullest at 4:02 a.m. ET on Dec. 15, but thankfully you don't need to be up at that time to see the beautiful sight, as our planet's only satellite will also appear full in the night prior and after.

December is a good time to view the Moon along with Jupiter. On Dec. 7, Jupiter will be in opposition, making it appear the brightest all year. The gas giant will be visible all night long.

On Dec. 14, Jupiter will appear bright between the nearly full Moon and Taurus’s star, Aldebaran.

The full moon occurs near the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower on Dec. 13 and 14, which isn’t good news for skygazers hoping to see shooting stars. The moonlight will reduce visibility, but according to NASA, the week prior should still be a good time to try to see the meteor shower.

Geminids are known for their speed and yellow color. The meteor shower is "considered to be one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers," according to NASA. It's possible to spot Geminids through Christmas Eve.

The next full moon happens on Jan. 13, known as the Wolf Moon.

1006

Three men were lucky to survive after being battered by powerful waves crashing onto Ke Iki Beach in northern Oahu Friday.

Video of the frightening encounter showed waves reaching three stories high, making the men appear minuscule right before slamming into them on the Hawaii beach.

"This video speaks volumes to how dangerous it can be," said officials with the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department.

Matt Moore, who filmed the ordeal, told HawaiiNewsNow that he was filming the rising surf at Ke Iki Beach that day around 2:30 p.m. when he saw the men on the rocks. In the video, people can be heard shouting at the men to get out.

2 DROWN ALONG HAWAII BEACH AFTER LARGE WAVE SWEEPS 3 OUT TO THE OCEAN

"You fall on this reef here, you’re cut," Moore told the station. "There’s no, like, skinned knee. It’s lacerations. It’s like going through a meat grinder."

A High Surf Warning had been issued by the National Weather Service that day, and warnings near the area were posted to alert beachgoers of the hazardous conditions on the beach.

Ocean Safety officials noted that, despite the close call, the men were safe.

"Fortunately these three young men went home tonight, but they were seriously cut up," they said.

1049

HONOLULU – Wisdom, the world's oldest known wild bird, has done it again, laying an egg on a remote island in the central Pacific.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Pacific region says the 74-year-old Laysan albatross returned to the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in late November to lay an egg.

The bird was first tagged in 1956 by experts with the United States Geological Survey and has likely flown millions of miles across the Pacific Ocean.

"Like other Laysan albatross, or mōlī in Hawaiian, Wisdom returns to the same nesting site each year to reunite with her mate and if able, lay one egg. For decades she did this with the same partner, Akeakamai, but that bird has not been seen for several years," the USFWS stated.

HURRICANE INIKI 30 YEARS LATER: HOW A MONSTER STORM IN HAWAII IMPACTED FILMING OF JURASSIC PARK

Experts have not said what they believe has led Wisdom's remarkable longevity, as most albatrosses typically live between 40 and 60 years.

Female albatrosses usually lay one egg every year or two, meaning Wisdom has likely laid around 30 to 45 eggs over her lifetime.

The islands in the central Pacific serve as the birds' home during the late fall, winter and spring before they fly north to the fishing grounds in Alaska for the warmer months.

According to the USFWS, more than 97% of Laysan albatross call the northwestern Hawaiian Islands home.

In photos and videos released by the agency, Wisdom can be seen with her leg band, with the identification number of Z333.

Biologists said her new mate was recently banded as well, which aids biologists in telling the birds apart.

DROUGHT THREATENS DRINKING WATER SUPPLY TO CENTRAL PACIFIC ISLANDS

The Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge sits about 2,400 miles west-northwest of Hawaii and is home to millions of birds and other marine species.

The land was previously a U.S. naval base, but in 1996 it was transferred to the Department of the Interior and became a refuge.

According to the USFWS, around 70% of the world's Laysan albatrosses use the refuge for nesting despite constant threats from tsunamis, cyclones and climate change.

1096

Mount Kilauea, the most active volcano in Hawaii, has seen the number of earthquakes at its summit double over the past week, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The summit region had gone from experiencing 10 earthquakes per day to 20 per day, officials said during their weekly update on the volcano. They noted that the activity has mostly occurred inside the mouth, or caldera, of the volcano and in the southern region of the caldera.

Most of the recorded earthquakes registered below a magnitude of 2.1.

Increased seismic activity was also detected in two of the rift zones, the USGS said.

The upper Southwest Rift Zone saw 25 earthquakes below a magnitude of 2 over the past two days, while the upper East Rift Zone saw between 25 and 60 earthquakes per day over the past two days, as well.

Officials said this rise in earthquake activity is due to a higher level of unrest at Kilauea’s summit region, compared to the activity of previous weeks.

This means that magma is accumulating within the volcano, causing the ground above to swell.

The USGS is maintaining a yellow "advisory" level-- the second on their four-rung alert scale. But because of this renewed ground movement, the USGS noted hazardous conditions in the area, such as uneven or rough terrain, crater wall instability and rockfalls.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

The most recent eruption at Kīlauea occurred near Nāpau Crater within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park from Sept. 15–20.

1245

GREEN COUNTY, Wis. – Winter weather has made its way to Wisconsin, and one county is using a cheese byproduct to treat slick roads this season.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation Highway Commissioner Chris Narveson said Green County has been using cheese brine to pre-wet roads before putting down salt treatments for about 20 years.

"It activates that salt quicker, so when it hits the ground, that's what really gets rid of your ice," Narveson said.

The salty, watery product is stored in tanks all year until it needs to be used. Narveson said WisDOT sources the brine from a local cheese factory called Grande Cheese Factory.

"They mix it to our specifications, which is 22% salt. But apparently, cheese brine is a trade-secret amongst the cheese factories," Narveson said.

WHEN DOES WINTER REALLY START? IT DEPENDS ON WHO YOU ASK

Narveson said using the cheese brine helps reduce industrial waste, and for some winter storms, salt isn't even necessary after using brine on the roads.

"The problem with moving to the brine for us here is our trucks are too small to handle the brine," he said. WisDOT needs trucks that can hold rock salt and the brine together for road treatment.

Narveson said the brine is helping Green County be more eco-friendly when treating the roads, because they need less salt afterward.

You may wonder if using a cheese byproduct leaves a stinky smell behind on the roads, and Narveson said there's not much of a smell. "When we keep it all summer in the big tanks, it'll get a little ripe," he said.

Narveson said more than 100,000 gallons of the cheese brine was used to treat roads last year. He said Green County is the second-least user of salt in the entire state of Wisconsin.

1296

UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A 64-year-old Pennsylvania woman is missing and may have fallen into a sinkhole Monday night while looking for her cat, according to state authorities.

The incident occurred in Unity Township in southwestern Pennsylvania outside a local eatery known as Monday’s Union Restaurant.

Elizabeth Pollard was last seen near the restaurant at around 5 p.m. Monday calling for her cat, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) said. By 1 a.m., Pollard had not returned home, prompting a relative to notify the police.

At around 3 a.m., PSP located Pollard’s car behind the restaurant, according to PSP. They noted that Pollard’s 5-year-old granddaughter was inside the vehicle, presumably for the eight hours between when Pollard was last seen and when police arrived.

"We, at that point in time, realized this could be a very bad situation," Pennsylvania State Trooper Steve Limani said.

Upon further inspection of the area, police located a sinkhole about the size of a manhole and 15-20 feet away from the vehicle, he said.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Limani noted that this prompted rescue teams to be joined by additional organizations, such as the Department of Mining and an excavation team, which began removing dirt so the rescue teams could access the sinkhole.

Sinkholes are not uncommon in the area due to subsidence, or gradual caving in of the ground, caused by coal mining activity in the area, according to Pleasant Unity Fire Chief and Operations Officer for this incident John Bacha.

Limani noted in a press conference that their current concern is the structural integrity of the nearby mine is beginning to falter from their efforts to clear the sinkhole of debris.

"That distress is becoming dangerous for potential other mine subsidence to take place and putting some of the people at risk," he said.

This is leading rescuers to adjust their approach to finding Pollard.
