       @TechLibre they had many, many targets, but most of them had already been completely obliterated by firebombing already.the criteria for selection of targets for the atomic bomb were that the city had not been touched by bombing previously.  Also, good weather.  So, the target wasn't selected with 100% certainty until the B-29 "weather ships", which were sent in advance of the actual strike package, had given the go-ahead.@amerika @professortom

       @amerika I'm divided on the issue of area bombing to begin with.  Once that Rubicon had been crossed, whether or not the weapon used was an atomic bomb was and is completely irrelevant to the morality of the choice to strikeTwo atomic strikes in rapid succession was the perfect balance.@professortom @TechLibre
