@Murray_N Authoritarians don't tend to intrude on personal life anywhere near as much as a modern western democracy.By today's standards most feudal systems could be categorized as personally libertarian and politically authoritarian. This can be applied to many past systems and today a good example are South American regimes especially El Salvador. Venezuela & communist states of course are totalitarian which is different

How do you define "libertarian"? If a self-described libertarian qualifies, then I present as evidence Jeremy Kauffman, who believes that libertarianism only works in a high trust society which means people who are predisposed to low-trust behavior (blacks) must be excluded.

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd Libertarianism is about maximising person liberty withing the structure of a cooperative civilisation. It's the fundamental philosophy of the West, it's the Enlightenment. Compare us to unenlightened societies, which are overwhelmingly autocratic or dictatorships. Slavery is everywhere, I am a wage-slave as everyone else who works for a paycheck. But if you live in Mexico or worse, in Cuba wage-slavery will not allow you to elevate YOURSELF."Gainfully employed" is an institution to itself, it is not a force of Nature and it will collapse under stress. You cannot rewrite the rules you cannot understand in the first place (unless you are a Socialist, of course!), which is you need to build institutions upon institution, not just The Institution on the top.The Islamic, Negro, Communist, Cartel institutions have a gap the size of a canyon where the foundation should be to build institutions comparable to the West and to the United States.

For social systems, leadership, mores, etc. something else is needed.Where I think the libertarians nail it is this:Government does not understand cause-effect.It sees an effect (poverty) and tries to address it directly (subsidies) instead of looking to the causes of poverty (low IQ, insanity, addiction, abuse, and low opportunity IMHO).I really dislike the State as a method of doing anything, and prefer culture and free markets. These have failed me at times but never let me down.

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd I have no problem with Nationalism, and in fact I think it's strongly preferable to both globalism and internationalism. Communities should ideally set their values according to what they believe, not have it imposed. However, there is no doubt that some communities are degenerate and therefore incompatible with civilised society. For example, the Gazans. I would advocate that they need to be de-islamised and pacified, and that in their case it is logical for it to be imposed top-down by an external entity like Israel. Just like we did with Germany after the Nazi period. They lost their way. The Allies rehabilitated Germany by de-nazifying and democratising it, and now it's a successful country excepting the latest problems with unsuitable immigration.#Democracy #Enlightenment #Israel#Gaza #Nazism #Islamofascism

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd I think that the Enlightenment is the best set of principles we have come up with so far, and it's taken us thousands of years of civilisation to get here. Reason and logic over emotion, individual liberty, representative government, and tolerance. These are the values of Western civilisation that have made us so wildly successful. The forces now threatening the West, from the lefty gender freaks to the immigrant head choppers, are all fundamentally anti-Enlightenment.

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd Socialism is anti-thetical to the core philosophy of the Enlightenment and collectivism is just another name for all the rotten ideas that birthed socialism. I 100% agree that it's the inept that love collectivist ideology because they're afraid to have to stand on their own two feet. It's the ideology of the weak. They turned opression into virtue. It's a sick inversion of the mortality of freedom, which values strength and competence and resilience.I see it as basically the social divide that our culture is battling. The Left have a slave-peasant mentality, and want to impose it on everyone, and we want to be left alone. Unfortunately, we've allowed them to control education and media, which are powerful social institutions, so we sleep walked into our current problems.

@korsier @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd I distrust the Enlightenment. I think it is fake from top to bottom, basically opportunistic individualism made into a virtue.Socialism fails because it transfers wealth from the productive to the unproductive, like unions and mandatory insurance. It's blight.Collectivism is a form of individualism. What matters is realism. One either believes in the human-only world, or the humans-plus-nature world.Realism says we need some shared activity and culture, with its basis in genetics, to have a functional society. We also need to avoid pitfalls like #DEADS (democracy, equality, atomization, diversity, and socialism) because they are non-functional.

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd I generally disagree with Plato on his concept of ideal forms, and his belief that reason is the true part to knowledge. This brings up the whole reason vs empiricism debate. I think you need both, but without empiricism you can end up reasoning your way into all kinds of logical sounding dead ends. It's the core problem we have in theoretical physics at the moment, which is pretty much all mathematical fantasy full of wormholes and parallel universes, none of which we have any empirical evidence for, they exist only on paper. That's fine when it's an esoteric field like physics that doesn't practically effect most people (actually it does, we just don't notice it). It's not fine when it comes to our system of government, which can easily turn oppressive and definitely does effect most people. And theirin lies the problem with the philosopher-king. Potentially great in theory, potentially terrible in practice and too difficult to change. Even worse when you consider the duality of human nature. I wouldn't trust myself not to become a tyrant in the pursuit of the "greater good" so why would I trust someone else? I'm more a Nietzsche kind of guy. The highest mortality is to do good, be strong, be resilient, be someone that others can rely on. Stay away from the slave mortality of collectivism. Grass roots voluntary cooperation over top-down imposition.

@amerika @wowaname @h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd I can somewhat confirm this from firsthand experience in Indonesia. While religion is a main exoteric vector people bond across here, ethnic groups are really the esoterically prime form of identity and people within ethnic groups meet via religious vectors as a proxy for ethnic relations (eg there are many Christians but Dayak Christians are a different group than Chinese Christians). (Or Chinese Buddhists will bond with Chinese Christians rather than Javanese Buddhists) The minority groups with significant presence in my city all have their own unions, which are partially recognized by government Compared to asking white people in America "okay but what kind of white person are you?" in Indonesia , people are very quick to announce what ethnic subgroup they belong to / assign new people they meet as belonging to ethnic group X or Y, language is another tool that augments "ethnic assessment" as every ethnic has their own living language to compliment the national language (speak Indonesian at the office or school , but say South Sulawesi natives speak Bugis in their in-group, out-group members can have some difficulty tracking discourse) An interesting phenomena: because my wife has small eyes and attends a Buddhist temple, the Chinese majority of our temple refer to her with titles of address specific for Chinese people rather than "proper" ones, I am always "mister" due to being white but sometimes wife privately admits being uncomfortable being lumped in with the Chinese as a part of them because she is not in fact ethnically Chinese Within Islam, the specific ethnic traditions within Islam supersede what is generally considered "Islamic". in my neck of the woods. all interesting to observe as an outsider

I hope the conservative revolution that we're seeing in some western countries grows, and countries which have been compromised by the Left (Australia, Canada, the UK, etc) come to their senses. It's going to be a hard battle though. Historically the Left has been better at communicating because they offer simple sounding solutions while we offer hard objectivity. It's only recently that the Right has found some balls and a new generation of communicators that can get our message out. @h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC The Althing is one example of what was common in such societies. They were notable because they were not democracies: instead, the group had to be in uniform agreement, like our death penalty juries today. In my experience, democracy always chooses the easy answers, which is why it always ends up at communism.

@h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC IMHO we have to avoid Lewontin's Fallacy here: there is probably no single "be a criminal" gene.More likely what happens is that certain genetic combinations are missing, interrupted by mutations or outbreeding, and so the brain is defective and not working properly. To a sane person, crime is idiotic because it is destructive and ultimately not as profitable as the same effort applied toward something constructive.

At the center of all this is the sub-standard human no longer fit to occupy the positions which are vital to address these issues. The demands of our Technological Civilization are slowly outpacing our capacity to supply qualified individuals. This is a fact, this is not some conjecture. The human capacity that was sufficient in the last century is already sub-standard, unless Technology regress and we are going to experience some sort of Technological Dark Ages. The are 40 million welfare recipients in the USA. No matter how you categorize, in reality these are Public Charge - not contributing anything positive, instead they are burning resources.China is producing more "graduates" than any other nation. Yet just recently they made efforts to attract "foreigner" talent. This is hard evidence of the sub-standard human, no longer fit to occupy the positions which are vital to address these issues.

@Ergo @FourOh-LLC @Cosmic @cjd @h4890 @korsier No, I think eugenics is part of the plan. Hitler was right about racial purity and nationalism, but his methods sucked and national socialism is a disaster.Francis Galton was right about eugenics but was not willing to apply it in a crucial area, which is removing sociopaths and psychopaths. Democracy finds them too useful. The libertarians are 100% right about economics: no socialism, encourage productivity instead of conformity. That's the sane part of their ideology and is rock-solid in my view.Half Earth is needed to avoid The Ecocide. This is the biggest taboo, which is that we have too many humans and too many low quality ones.We need the kings back. Democracy and voluntarism are comical, even more dangerous than dictatorship, but we don't want _that_ either.I suggest we also return to ancestral, national faiths and move away from organized internationalist religion.

@h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC It hit me in the shower:Libertarians are focused on supply-side. There is nothing wrong with this but it is incomplete. What about demand? What the rest of us are saying is that herds in huge groups make terrible decisions, so you get Coca-Cola and Cardi B.The markets cannot correct this; only culture can.And culture needs strong leaders to protect it!The role of the free market is to incentivize producers to make useful things, but that is in part a moral/ethical decision, and those are semi-arbitrarily delineated by culture.

First, most are incapable of creating any morality; they are simply repeating what they were told or saw in a movie.Second, moralities are not infinite.Third, without a shared value system, there is no reward in morality, so it abolishes itself. And regarding thinking and living independently, people do that anyway, just within the parameters offered. @h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 And Britannica, which points out that the definition became politicized and lost coherence beyond the point I mention:Individualism, political and social philosophy that emphasizes the moral worth of the individual. Although the concept of an individual may seem straightforward, there are many ways of understanding it, both in theory and in practice. The term individualism itself, and its equivalents in other languages, dates—like socialism and other isms—from the 19th century.Individualism once exhibited interesting national variations, but its various meanings have since largely merged. Following the upheaval of the French Revolution, individualisme was used pejoratively in France to signify the sources of social dissolution and anarchy and the elevation of individual interests above those of the collective. The term’s negative connotation was employed by French reactionaries, nationalists, conservatives, liberals, and socialists alike, despite their different views of a feasible and desirable social order. In Germany, the ideas of individual uniqueness (Einzigkeit) and self-realization—in sum, the Romantic notion of individuality—contributed to the cult of individual genius and were later transformed into an organic theory of national community. According to this view, state and society are not artificial constructs erected on the basis of a social contract but instead unique and self-sufficient cultural wholes. In England, individualism encompassed religious nonconformity (i.e., nonconformity with the Church of England) and economic liberalism in its various versions, including both laissez-faire and moderate state-interventionist approaches. In the United States, individualism became part of the core American ideology by the 19th century, incorporating the influences of New England Puritanism, Jeffersonianism, and the philosophy of natural rights. American individualism was universalist and idealist but acquired a harsher edge as it became infused with elements of social Darwinism (i.e., the survival of the fittest). “Rugged individualism”—extolled by Herbert Hoover during his presidential campaign in 1928—was associated with traditional American values such as personal freedom, capitalism, and limited government.https://www.britannica.com/topic/individualism

@h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 Why conservatives are not individualists:Edmund Burke (1729–1797) believed that individualism and the promotion of individual interests undermined the common-wealth and created an uncivil and unstable society. Nineteenth-century French sociology emphasized the importance of social solidarity against the rise of egoistic forms of individualism, and the sociology of Émile Durkheim (1858–1917) can be interpreted as a sustained intellectual attack on utilitarian individualism represented by Herbert Spencer (1820–1895).https://sk.sagepub.com/ency/edvol/socialtheory/chpt/individualism

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd @verita84 Conservatism and Libertarianism are not necessarily friends. Libertarianism sits on an axis across from authoritarianism. Conservatism sits on an axis across from progressivism/socialism. There are left wing libertarians and they are the old school leftists, the ones who believe in freedom of speech and keeping government out of personal matters. But they're completely sidelined by the progressive left, which is thoroughly authoritarian and ideological in nature, the ones with the rainbow flags and red hair and screaming at everyone.I hang out with the libertarians. The biggest threat to personal liberty is government, and I've seen enough of it in action and up close to know how thoroughly rotten it is.

@h4890 @amerika @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 The main difference of opinion between capitalists and socialists is essentially negative vs positive rights respectively. The right to dissent is the underpinning of all individual rights (ie. Take "No." for an answer in respect to others' person and lawfully owned property). The moment one tries to conceive of a right to have their "needs" satisfied by others, it starts to impinge on the former, because it requires the collective to seize the property of the individual involuntarily (eg. taxation), and apply force against their person if they resist. On the other hand, there's a lot of circumstances where without reasonable limitations on the right to accumulate exclusive property, you could end up with the bulk of society being effectively enslaved to a minority who have monopolised the available property (aka: the 1%). That's basically the crux of the turmoil between the two. Until we figure out a way of sustainably harmonising those two conflicting concerns, the problems will continue. The other thing is that concepts like democracy need to be limited such that no collective majority decision can undermine or abrogate the individual's negative rights, otherwise it's just gang rape by another name.

It is individualistic, therefore hostile to culture and other intangibles. Tragedy of the Commons inbound.2. It is voluntarist, which means that it becomes a property conquered by others. This is why civilization moved past anarchy, which is conflatable with libertarianism just like "egoism" is.However, I think libertarianism is a vital part of any functioning society, because every economic system other than capitalism is a political system pretending to be an economic one. It's just knowing where to apply it, I think.

@amerika @h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd @verita84 I skimmed your essay. Some of it rung true to me, though I personally happen to like individualism and equality. However when I speak of those terms I mean specifically individual liberty, and the equality of rights (specifically rights to dissent). That said, I do think having a goal which the whole society is working towards is beneficial as you said. It's how the Giza pyramids were built for just one example. But I don't think such a goal needs to be so grandiose to fulfil the same function. For instance, the late Elinor Ostrom provides many examples of communally self-organised and self-governed management of what she terms "common pool resources", which can include things like an area of forest for logging, an estuary for fishing, an irrigation system, an aquifer, etc, which is public in nature, but requires a framework of communal trust and cooperation to manage equitably and sustainably for all who require access. She concludes with 8 principals which make or break the ability to do so effectively, based on 1,000's of case studies both historical and contemporary.Even something as small as several farms having to share a stream for irrigating their crops, and maintain the system, schedule time and duration of access, and have a framework to keep each other honest and accountable, is more than sufficient to provide the kind of goal you're advocating. It doesn't have to be on the level of an entire civilisation necessarily. You're quite right that no man is an island, and without that kind of sense of shared ethos and public responsibility, we've lost the heart of what makes us noble as a people. Yet it's far easier to take modest steps to get back to that on a smaller community by community basis, rather than trying to forcibly manufacture agreement of people numbering in the millions or billions.Anyway, if you're interested, here's a synopsis.https://earthbound.report/2018/01/15/elinor-ostroms-8-rules-for-managing-the-commons/And here's the entire book, which in 2009 won her the distinction of being the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.https://wtf.tw/ref/ostrom_1990.pdf

That is, per his cause-effect analysis, all things came about for a reason.Civilization came about for a reason or several. One is the capitalist economies of scale; if each person takes on a specialized role, you can make more crops or hunt more successfully, for example. Another is that if you do not have a strong leader and military, some other group will arrive and your wives will get introduced to foreign penises and offspring (literal, original meaning of "invade").

Most likely so!Monarchism has aspects of socialism, libertarianism, fascism, and anarchy in it.As Nietzsche says, "Everything the State says is a lie, and everything it has, it has stolen." From whom? From what came before, of course.Socialism: people who are below 115 IQ points get lifelong jobs, pensions, and subsidized healthcare.Libertarianism: reward the good, remove the bad, leave everyone else alone, but mostly, rule by CARROT not STICK since life responds to opportunity more than fear.Fascism: not really. Monarchism believes in strong central power but does not micromanage like the microcephalic fascists and Communists (and, er, Democrats, but that probably fits in the latter category anyway and always did).Anarchism: monarchism is informal instead of bureaucratic, by nature. It prefers to have good people in power who figure stuff out on a case-by-case basis like conservatives.

@amerika @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd @verita84 @toiletpaper Our current civil conflict is mostly the clash between freedom vs equality. And by current I mean roughly since we got rid of feudalism. I'm on the side of personal freedom. Individuals should be able to pursue their interests, to the extent of their talents, without interference from the mob. That will naturally lead to unequal outcomes but people are not inherently equal in interests and abilities anyway.Much suffering has come from the idea of equality, especially in the 20th century where we piled up the corpses by the millions in the name of equality. I'm all for equality of opportunity, which is another way of saying, get the state out of the way and end discrimination based on innate features (race, gender, etc). @h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 @toiletpaper People need survival first of all. Once that is stable, they can worry about their pleasure-pain ratio, but generally speaking, most people endure a fair amount of pain and suffering in life anyway so it is less relevant. Then there is the old human favorite, "is pleasure merely the absence of pain or something else," which seems silly to me as well. Without something to reach out for, an affirmative good that one enjoys, pleasure is misunderstood as complacency.

@h4890 @korsier @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 @toiletpaper The definition of power is relative to the individual, most likely. I suppose he does not mean electricity.Power is capacity and the ability to do things. Without it, or at least a belief that one has it, paralysis results. He was addressing semi-religious theories (Kant-Plato-Schopenhauer) as well as the new consciousness of Darwinism or something like it.Why do organisms live? To act; this requires power. All life seeks not merely to survive, but to have capacity in that role.I think it would probably be easier to understand in the original German, if anyone spoke the German of that era.

True intelligence is more than just recursion. True intelligence requires sensory input that develops a nervous systems, sending signals which never bounce or echo in any way.You can develop "organic processors" until you blue in face, your will never ignite a single spark of consciousnesses the same way a whale or an octopus never will. Many suspect that the Neanderthal died out not because of climate, but because they could not develop language to communicate. Those insignificant hissing sound the Homo Sapiens make helped us to develop self-awareness more than anything else you can name. And look at just how imperfect of an invention spoken, written language is - the AI is incapable to operate on the same flawed level. It looks as is deeply flawed inventions maybe even helped us to reach the level of this conciseness.

@amerika what "incentive"? How do you "tempt" and "bribe" Artificial Intelligence? Biological life is will extort effort far exceeding its energy storage in flight or fight. Humans will do the same for entertainment only, or for reasons that go against reason. There is no way AI will ever be able to do that, not even with "incentives". Once the power source dips below the consumption level the AI will shut down. Not only that, the AI will always act in agreement with the Laws of Physics, and will seek the lowest level of energy and zero activity. That's the only and overpowering "incentive" that is "tempting" to the AI.

A creative person will invent a meaning for themselves and hopefully create a fulfilling life. A less creative person might get lost in the essential meaninglessness and become depressed, even suicidal, because it seems to be true that we fundamentally need meaning in our lives.Religion and tribalism once solved that problem, because everyone around you had exactly the same meaning. @h4890 @amerika @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 @toiletpaper Now there we agree. The law should stay out of personal choices as far as possible. Our society should be built on cooperation and mutual obligation, not lawyering rules written far away by politicians.

@h4890 @amerika @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 I've used AI for 2/3 of the things you mention (I refuse to do long wordy business emails). I find it a real time saver. I've also had AI build websites from scratch, which it does in seconds, and then tweak/edit as needed, so another big time saver. All sets this a new baseline, so that your expected level of productivity will require use of AI and those that don't adapt it will be at a disadvantage.I compare the nature of work now to how it was at the start of my career (last century) and the required level of productivity has gone up massively. That requires expertise with all the tools that makes that possible.TLDR Choosing not to use AI will be like choosing not to have a mobile phone. Technically possible, but puts you at a disadvantage, plus inconvenience, so you'll use it.

@korsier @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd @verita84 "Religion and tribalism once solved that problem, because everyone around you had exactly the same meaning."I think so, and tribalism mandated a culture of which religion was a part, so the problems of organized religion were far away. But invent meaning for ourselves as individuals? I think this is as much a fiction as the Rapture, a hope rather than a reality. I go into this more on the mailing list, but meaning is found in power which is found in reality not retreat into individualism (differentiated from individuation).

@korsier @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd @verita84 I used to detest bullet points because people used them badly, but when done effectively, they are the kindest form of communication.Remove all nonsense, speak clearly, and then everyone knows what is expected of them OR what they need to ask the bossman.

@korsier @h4890 @Cosmic @FourOh-LLC @cjd @verita84 @toiletpaper Orthodoxy is how they achieve a false unity. This is common to dying societies.

@h4890 @amerika @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 @toiletpaper I disagree strongly that wokeness levels the playing field. In theory, that's what it sounds like, and that's how the Left promotes it. In practice, it's intentional discrimination and bastardry of the worst sort. It's fundamentally nasty, a weapon to be used against one's ideological opponents. It's giving people jobs based on their skin colour and gender (immutable characteristics) rather than their ability to do the job and values (things which can be changed). Wokeness is straight up evil, no different to a deep south lynch mob from the depression era.

@h4890 @amerika @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 @toiletpaper I think that's a brave move to try to change a company's culture unless that's what you've been hired to do. That sort of thing has to come from the top down and there must be political will to change, especially if you're going against the trend . Most of the people I work with seem utterly sick of DIE and wokeness but just go along with it because it's a part of work and for the most part it's a mild annoyance rather than a real problem. Here in Australia, you know that if you go into a meeting with the bigwigs there will be a formal acknowledgement of country where we pretend that the Aboriginal people have some sort of mystical timeless connection to land and the other bugbears of the day like getting more women into technical jobs. At day to day practical meetings all anyone cares about is meeting requirements and deadlines so that we keep getting paid. Politics is barely a blip. I don't even really care what the systems I design and build are used for, I care that they work and the client is happy. I won't do anything obviously questionable, I've turned down good money to build gambling systems, but most of the stuff I do is CRM related.

@h4890 @amerika @Cosmic @cjd @FourOh-LLC @verita84 @toiletpaper My experience with agile is that unless competently managed it results in chaos, this most enterprises which claim to be agile are actually watergile which is a mess of both worlds.Having worked for said military industrial complex my main takeaway was how dysfunctional it was at the organisational level much in the same way as most public sector organisations. Lots of embedded opaque power structures.
