STATE 94: Washington D.C. The fifth annual conference of the Society for Technology And Teacher Education (STATE) was held in Washington, D.C. in mid-March. This year's conference provided many opportunities to share ideas and expertise about technology and teacher education Q preservice, inservice, and graduate education in all areas. It included workshops, paper presentations, panel discussions, demonstration/poster sessions, invited speakers, and a visit to the National Demonstration Laboratory. Keynote speakers included: Beverly Hunter of Bolt, Beranek, and Newman (formerly NSF Program Director for Applications of Advanced Technologies for Science Education); Edward Fitzsimmons, Special Assistant for Education and Training, Executive Office of the President; and Linda Roberts, Director of Technology and Special Advisor on Technology, U.S. Department of Education. Of particular interest to many of those who attended was a panel discussion titled The IBM Teacher Preparation Grants Program: Past, Present, and Future which was led by Mike Waggoner and Tom Switzer from the University of Northern Iowa, and Anne Kellerman from the Effective Technologies Group. True to its title, the discussion centered around the development of the grants program, what sort of success the program has had, and how the schools can continue to provide exceptional technology training for teachers. At the conference this year the name of STATE was changed to the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE). SITE (formerly STATE) is a coalition of teacher educators who are interested in the creation and dissemination of knowledge about the use of technology in teacher education. This includes effective approaches to teaching preservice and inservice educators about education and information technology. SITE promotes the development and dissemination of theoretical knowledge, conceptual research, and professional practice knowledge through conferences, monographs, projects, and its Journal of Technology and Teacher Education. SITE is sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE). ----------------------- SITE '95 in San Antonio ----------------------- Next year's SITE conference will be held in San Antonio, Texas on March 22-25, 1995.
