Electronic Student Portfolios at Brescia Brescia College in Owensboro, Kentucky is designing its Teacher Education program around the use of Electronic Student Portfolios (ESPs). Each student's ESP is a comprehensive three-year record of their development into a teacher. Students are encouraged to be as creative as possible as they develop their ESPs using state-of-the-art IBM workstations with multimedia and authoring capabilities. All Teacher Education classes have portfolio requirements. Specific portfolio requirements include a field journal of schools visited during the program, software evaluations, and a carefully documented evolving knowledge base in the studentUs particular area of emphasis. The ESPs combine the strong liberal arts emphasis of the Brescia program with the use of computer technology. The ESP is actually a three-ring binder containing floppy disks and the information necessary to run the various programs and files on them. As part of their ESP, students develop instructional programming using Linkway and Toolbook which prepares them, as future teachers, to create software for use in their own classrooms. Other areas covered by the portfolios include the use of desktop publishing and graphics programs. Some students bring their ESPs to life with audio clips, video clips, or dramatic visual effects theyUve created with the multimedia and authoring technology . The program's emphasis on integrating technology and education provides an exciting and unique environment for stimulating intellectual growth. The Teacher Education faculty at Brescia College believe that the Electronic Student Portfolios provide a very meaningful way for students to capture and explore professional education.
