Computing Fundamentals via Fundamental Computing at Ohio State Using a new strategy that combines LinkWay Live!, e-mail and newsgroups via the Internet, instructors from Ohio State University are preparing K-12 educators to use communications technology. Students of this course use a diskette with a run-time version of LinkWay Live! and a LinkWay Live! folder. The pages within the folder contain buttons and objects with the basic information to get the student started with e-mail and newsgroups. It also contains pages and buttons with missing text and document files. These "missing files" are added to the folder by e-mail, FTP, or other means. The student builds a technology reference tool by successively adding material to their folder through access to resources available on the Internet. LinkWay Live! pages contain common button elements--definitions, explanations, help, bibliographic references, classroom uses, essays, learning tips, questions and answers, and a "print anything" button. Topics include electronic communications, hypermedia, computer hardware and software concepts, survivors guide to DOS and UNIX, and software evaluation and use. This strategy is designed to help educators make an easy transition to the effective use of electronic communication tools. E-mail and newsgroups pace the delivery of the course and create a sense of timeliness as students progress through it. Preliminary evaluation data will contribute to the final design of the folder.
