University of West Virginia Promotes NETIE (National Education Technology Information Exchange) The National Education Technology Information Exchange (NETIE) represents a national database of education and teacher preparation materials designed to promote communication among schools of education and selected K-12 agencies. This project is a joint venture between the University of West Virginia College of Graduate Studies and IBM. The IBM AS/400 mainframe computer which contains the database is managed by UWVCOGS and is funded by IBM through a $1.1 million grant. The underlying principle of NETIE is that communication in education is vital. If education is to thrive, classroom teachers need to be aware of the latest research in curriculum and instruction. At the same time it is important that teacher education programs reflect the ideas and concerns of the classroom teacher. The NETIE philosophy stresses the need for teacher education to provide not only a theoretical basis for learning but also an arsenal of delivery strategies for the teacher to take into the classroom. By establishing communication links between Schools of Education and K-12 schools, this principle can be maximized to benefit both. To achieve its goals, NETIE plans to implement four major components: 1. Information Center -a communications hub where participants can obtain information, share ideas, and access a demographic database of projects within schools of education. Initial information is being collected from more than 140 School of Education projects funded through IBM's $30 million teacher preparation initiative. 2. NETIE Notes -will be comprised of a collection of technical topics, topical educational opinions, notices of grants, and notices of upcoming events. 3. Colleague's Corner -will include a library of case studies, proceedings of relevant conventions, and reviews of new technologies, software, and research dealing with education and technology. 4. NETIE Journal -is planned as an on-line, refereed electronic journal specializing in articles on the uses of technology in education based on research methodologies. The Journal's relational database will allow for retrospective searches and referencing capabilities not currently available within the field of teacher education.
