Electronic Research Center Sitting down at a computer and having access to 34 online and CD-ROM databases may seem like a future use for networking technology, but at California State Long Beach that future vision is at work today. The Electronic Research Center, with support from IBM, has been developed by Cal State Long Beach to "explore the K-12 curriculum applications" and help faculty and students in the graduate school of education with electronic research and class assignments related to curriculum instruction. These online and CD-ROM databases include encyclopedias, periodical indexes, information on books and magazines, newspaper indexes, network software, and specialized information such as The Whole Earth catalog by Broderbund and The Library of The Future by World Library. In addition to research materials faculty, graduate students and educators in Los Angeles and Orange Counties can preview and evaluate over 1700 instructional software packages for Apple and IBM computers. These programs are on long term loan from the publishers and are available in the Instructional Software Library at Long Beach. Programs like these give educators and pre-service teachers a more effective way to stay current with a rapidly changing educational environment.
