I do agree. I wrote in at least two other places/ emails, the _free_ population, which is what I meant. I also wrote that the unfree population (primarily the black slaves) were at a literacy rate in the order of 80% (but the timing for this stat might be more recent - I don't remember sorry). So, I should have written (for the third time) "the _free_ population".
