I don't know that this is related to your problem, but you might want
to try a newer version of tar (i.e. 1.15.1).  There were known bugs in
1.14 that have since been fixed (see the bug-tar list).  I had some
non-tla related trouble with 1.14 that was fixed by upgrading to
1.15.1.
