Welcome to CELIA (Computer Enhanced Language Instruction Archives). Note: This archive just started in January, so parts of it are almost empty, although there is quite a bit of stuff for the Macintosh in the English section. If you have suggestions, problems, files to contribute, or would like to work as one of the volunteers, please send e-mail to fred.swartz@merit.edu. What is CELIA? This is a collection of computer resources that are useful in teaching languages (CALL, CALI, ...). It consists of public domain, freeware, and shareware files. It also contains Gopher links to other useful resources on the Internet. It is maintained by volunteers; you can help by adding materials, giving feedback, or offering to help. This archive makes use of Gopher links so many items will not appear to the FTP user. More information on CELIA In the 00info directory there are two files you might want to read celia-intro.txt -- purpose, history, and future of CELIA. celia-how-to.txt -- guide to accessing CELIA. Access This archive is designed to be accessed most easily by an Internet Gopher client. Parts of it can also be accessed by FTP or AFS. Gopher Access: host: gopher.archive.merit.edu port: 7055 path: celia-gopher or gopher gopher.archive.merit.edu, and look in Merit Software Archives FTP Access: There are currently two FTP sites: one in North America and one in Australia. For both of them use the login "anonymous" with your e-mail address as a password. archive.umich.edu in the directory celia-ftp This service has a load limit so it would be best to use it only during non-work hours EST (UCT+5). Use Gopher instead of FTP if possible since much of CELIA will not be visible to FTP. ftp.latrobe.edu.au AFS access If you are using AFS (Andrew File System) CELIA can be found at /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive/celia-ftp Top level organization The top level of the CELIA archives is by language; the next level down is by skill, etc. At the bottom is a division by platform. english incoming (where to put submissions with ftp) vocabulary mac dos grammar ... ... francais incoming (where to put submissions with ftp) vocabulary ... ... .... --- file formats --- All files have a suffix indicating the type: .txt text all platforms just a simple text (ASCII) file. .hqx text Mac Encoded in BinHex (.hqx) format. You will need a program to decode that -- ask your local Mac guru and he/she will know what to do. After converting from BinHex, you may have a file with another suffix. .sea binary Mac This is a Self-Extracting Archive. Just double click on it and it will uncompress and unpack itself into something that will be a normal application of document for the Mac. .exe binary DOS .zip binary DOS (other suffixes to be supplied) Submissions If you would like to submit something to these archives, you can use FTP (but not Gopher!) to "put" it in a celia-ftp//incoming directory. Note that incoming directories are not permitted to be read, only written. Files are accepted in the following formats: Mac (.hqx, .txt) DOS (.exe, .zip, .txt) For right now, the only directory that has an "incoming" submissions area is English. If you put something there, send me (fred.swartz@merit.edu) a message. -- Fred (fred.swartz@merit.edu) 94-02-03 .
