But it all depends on how we treat them. They can be our assets if they are allowed to develop to their fullest potentials. They can be our liabilities if their normal development is stifled. Children are born with different talents: they can develop to become useful citizens and professionals in all walks of life. A wrong turn in childhood tells a different story of wasted lives, as shown in the rising rate of delinquency, drug addiction, school drop-outs, suicide, and other forms of negative development. FOCUS The Center for Child Development (CCD) was established in September of 1991. It focuses on children, youth, families, and school as its central theme, A major emphasis is on the understanding of socialization of Chinese children (in Hong Kong and other Chinese societies). Cross-cultural studies of child development in the Asian-Pacific regions are also emphasized. A main objective of the Center is on fostering positive development (such as enhancing achievement motivation, self-competence, and creativity in problem-solving). Inter-disciplinary research and training programs are a distinctive feature of the Center. The common interest in the well-being of children among many disciplines will enable the joining of forces from psychology, education, sociology, social work, communications, art and music, and other fields in finding innovative approaches for the betterment of children and of society in the long run. AIMS CCD works to... 1. initiate collaborative research on children, youth, families, and school. 2. disseminate child development information to academic and community professionals, policy makers, parents, and others erested in children and families. 3. offer training and learning experiences to children, youth, parents, and to community professionals. SERVICES CCD strives to provide information and learning experience in formats appropriate to, and convenient for, each audience. The following are some examples: * For community professionals: Newsletters, conferences, and seminars Individual consultation, small group seminars, and concise reports in response to inquiries * For academic community Articles in professional journals, conferences, seminars, workshops, current research on child development * For parents, children, and the public Informative pamphlets, radio and TV talk shows, newspaper columns, workshops on positive development (e.g. raising single child).
