The Faculty of Social Sciences is concerned in the broadest sense 
with the study of human society.  It looks at people's situations in 
a spatial, historical, structural, interactional and organizational 
way.

The Faculty now consists of seven departments.  Four of these 
departments - Geography, Government and International Studies, 
History, and Sociology - are disciplinary based.  The other three - 
Education Studies, Physical Education, and Social Work are more 
oriented to professional training.  

The departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences offer three-year 
full-time courses leading to the following degrees: BSW (Hons); BA 
(Hons) in Geography, Government and International Studies,  History, 
and Sociology; BSocSc (Hons) in China Studies; BA (Hons) in European 
Studies; and BA (Hons) in Physical Education and Recreation Studies.

The common core of all these courses has been designed so as to 
enable students to develop their understanding of the meaning of 
human existence in modern society.  It also encourages students to 
appreciate the unique characteristics of Chinese culture and the way 
in which this culture has influenced and been influenced by other 
cultures.

The University was one of the earliest institutions to provide 
social work training in the territory.  The Social Work course has 
evolved over the years to meet the changing needs and new challenges 
of the local community.  The BSW (Hons) degree course consists of a 
balanced education in the theory and practice of social work, 
including practical fieldwork training.

In Geography, Government and International Studies, History and 
Sociology, the Departments provide students with the opportunity to 
read for three years for a BA (Hons) degree in Arts and Social 
Sciences in the respective disciplines.  Such degrees typically lead 
to careers in teaching, public administration, industry and 
commerce, the media and the arts.

The BSocSc (Hons) in China Studies provides the opportunity for 
students to choose from among three options within the Faculty 
(Geography, History and Sociology) or to choose a fourth option 
(Economics) from the School of Business.  The focus on China 
provides a strong integrating element in the programme which relies 
as well on the methodologies and insights of the contributing 
disciplines.

The BA (Hons) in European Studies is a four-year degree, focusing on 
the culture, history and contemporary evolution of Europe.  
Intensive language instruction, in French or German, is provided 
throughout the course.  In the third year, students study and work 
in Europe.

The BA (Hons) in Physical Education and Recreation Studies is the 
first such degree offered in the territory.  It has two tracks: 
sports and physical education, and recreational management.  The 
Course is supported by fully equipped human physiology laboratories.

The Department of Education Studies supports several subjects as a 
part of the complementary studies curriculum for the BA (Hons) in 
Arts and Social Sciences degree course.  The perspective of 
education and learning is considered under Education & Human 
Development, Education & Society, Psychology of Learning & 
Instruction, and Educational Thought.  Other subjects available 
include National Systems of Education and Research Methods in 
Education.  The Department also offers a variety of Psychology 
subjects.  These range from introductory to advanced levels (such as 
Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Counselling Theories and 
Practice,  Social Psychology).

In addition to offering courses for the Postgraduate Diploma in 
Education and the Master of  Education , the Faculty also offers 
research  programme reading to the awards of Master of Philosophy 
(MPhil)/Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Overall, the Faculty of Social Sciences seeks to implement the 
University goal of providing well integrated individuals who can 
contribute meaningfully to the development of their society.
