The primary academic objective of the Faculty is to provide students 
with educational programmes which are relevant to the needs of Hong 
Kong.  In particular, the needs of local industry are catered for in 
the Faculty's curricula.  Industry in this sense not only includes 
manufacturing but also the commercial, servicing, and government 
sectors.

The Faculty currently offers six programmes at the honours degree and 
postgraduate degree levels: the BSc (Hons) degree course in Combined 
Sciences, the BSc (Hons) degree course in Computing Studies with 
emphasis on Information Systems and the taught-course based Master of 
Science (MSc) programme in Analytical Chemistry and Master of Science 
(MSc) programme in Scientific Computing.  In addition, all 
departments offer postgraduate research degree programmes leading to 
the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 
awards which are awarded strictly on the basis of research.

Research activities are considered salient elements in the well-being 
of the academic programmes of the Faculty.  Honours degree students 
are required to undertake a significant final-year research project 
which results in an independent thesis.  The project requirement 
enables students to work closely with academic and technical staff 
members, thus gaining experience in real-world scientific 
investigations as practised by professionals.

The departments of the Faculty place considerable emphases on 
computing and problem solving.  Real world applications of science, 
mathematics, and computing are considered essential ingredients to 
the courses offered by the Faculty.
