The Faculty of Arts provides courses which seek to direct students 
into intellectual and creative adventure.  The need in Hong Kong 
today is for graduates who can express themselves cogently and 
clearly, who can speak and write Chinese and English confidently, 
elegantly, and accurately, and who possess a range of transferable, 
as opposed to narrow job-oriented, skills.


Undergraduate Degree Courses

B.A. (Hons.) in Arts and Social Sciences  
----------------------------------------

This is an Honours Degree course with a common structure involving 
several different Majors in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences.  
Subjects such as Chinese Language and Literature, English Language and 
Literature, and Religious Studies are taught by the Arts Faculty 
Departments of Chinese Language and Literature, English Language and 
Literature, and Religion and Philosophy, respectively.  This B.A. (Hons.) 
course is distinguished from many other degrees in Hong Kong by a 
commitment to "Whole-person" education through a well-balanced and 
carefully designed course, and an emphasis on bilingual training and 
multidisciplinary exposure.


B.A. (Hons.) in Humanities  
--------------------------

This is a course with an interdisciplinary, bicultural and bilingual 
thrust.  The first year provides a common foundation programme, and in 
the second and third years students select either 'Chinese and Western 
Literary and Critical Studies', 'Language and Communication' or 
'Literature and Professional Writing' as their Option.


B.A. (Hons.) in Translation  
---------------------------

This is a four-year programme, the third year of which is spent in 
supervised full-time employment (placement, internship).  This innovative 
course is designed to educate well-rounded bi-cultural communicators for 
professional translation and language careers.


B.A. (Hons.) in Music  
---------------------

The course emphasizes the development of creativity, performance skills, 
and intellectual ability in all students through a group of core subjects 
in music history, theory, technology and performance.  In the second year 
of study students select an area of specialization: either Performance/
Pedagogy, Composition/Music Production, or General Concentration.  
Students in the General Concentration do advanced work in areas such as 
Music Education,  Music History, or Music Theory.



The first degree programmes at the Hong Kong Baptist University all 
have an important and substantial liberal education component, otherwise 
known as Complementary Studies.  Hong Kong Baptist University has always 
emphasized liberal and whole-person education, and also believes that its 
graduates should be bilingual and computer-literate.  The Department of 
Religion and Philosophy and the Language Centre make very substantial 
contributions, university-wide, to the various degree curricula.  All 
students spend some of their time in studies in Religion and Philosophy 
and in developing their language skills, especially in subjects such as 
English for Academic Purposes, Writing and Communication in Modern Chinese, 
and Putonghua.

The Faculty also offers research programmes leading to the awards of 
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)/Doctor Of Philosophy (PhD) and taught 
postgraduate degree-courses including M.A. in Language Studies, M.A. 
in Music and M.A. in Chinese Literature, Language & Culture.

In addition the Language Centre offers a range of courses and 
facilities under a specially funded Language Enhancement programme.
