BSW (HONS) SOCIAL WORK

Course Aims
-----------

This course seeks to develop students' abilities to consider the 
ethical, practical and theoretical aspects of professional social 
work in Hong Kong.

Students are expected to be analytical, to consider alternative 
methods of intervention, and to be aware of the diversity of the role 
of a social worker.

Integration of knowledge, skills, and professional values is 
emphasized in the course of study.

Personal attention is provided through the use of tutorials and 
small-groups.  Close teacher-student and student-student interaction 
is encouraged.


Careers Prospects
-----------------

Students may enter into Social Work positions as Assistant Social 
Work Officers with the Government or in Non-Government Agencies.  
Graduates may also find employment in fields such as education, 
personnel, welfare services, human resource management, and related 
areas.

In the field of Social Work, jobs may be found in working with 
children, youth, families, the elderly, and any other age groups.  
There is also the opportunity to serve in the field of 
rehabilitation, outreach, mental health, community service, school 
social work, medical social work, and many other settings.

Some students may progress to advanced studies in social work, social 
sciences, human services, counselling, education, and other related 
fields.

Year 1  Introduction to Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Hong Kong 
	Social Services, Social Work Intervention and Processes, Human 
	Growth & Development, English, Computer Literacy, Social 
	Statistics, Religion & Philosophy, Social Sciences elective.

Year 2  Health, Disease and Psychopathology, Theory and Practice in 
	Social Work, Fieldwork, Social Policy, Social Work Research, 
	Law and Society, Social Sciences elective.

Year 3  Theory and Practice in Social Work, Options in Social Work 
	(Working with the Mentally disordered, Youth, Family, 
	Elderly), Fieldwork, Administration in Social Welfare 
	Agencies, Social Welfare in Chinese Societies, Social Work 
	Honours Project.
