SOCIOLOGY OPTION

Option Aims & Careers
---------------------

The Sociology Option focuses particularly upon the comparative study 
of the social structure and social processes under Maoist, Deng and 
post-Deng regimes in China.  Students are encouraged to understand 
the interconnectedness of social, economic and political processes in 
China and to use this conceptual framework as an important tool for 
analyzing the social dynamics of contemporary Chinese society.  
Within the programme, special attention will be given to areas such 
as Chinese social thought, population studies, urbanization, family 
and kinship and social stratification.  Students will be introduced 
to both basic ideas and to current sociological research in these 
areas.

Training in this programme combines the general theoretical and 
methodological skills needed for student to become competent 
sociologists, with specialist preparation in  substantive areas 
related to China which will equip them to work in China related work 
situations.  Such a training is intended to broaden and deepen 
students’ analytic skills and enable them to be sensitized to both 
the general and more specific changes that are taking place in 
contemporary China.

Within the Option, students will be given considerable guided choice 
in selecting appropriate option electives so that they receive a 
balanced background suitable for careers in academic, business and 
public sectors.


Option Curriculum

The study plan is as follows:

Year 1  Principles of Sociology I & II, Hong Kong Society, Ideology 
	and Socialism in China, English for Academic Purposes, 
	Putonghua for Academic Purposes, Computer Literacy, 
	Statistical Methods for Social Sciences, Foundations of 
	Political Science, Basic Economic Principles, Man & the 
	Physical Environment, Perspectives on Chinese History.

Year 2  Traditional Chinese Society, Social Research Methods I & II, 
	Sociological Theory I - Classical Theory, Foundations of 
	Chinese Economy, Regional Geography of China, Foundations of 
	Modern China, Government & Politics of China, Modern Chinese 
	Society, Writing Skills in Modern Chinese, Religion & 
	Philosophy Subjects.  One of the following: Sociology of 
	Marriage & the Family, Population Studies, Political 
	Sociology, Modernization & Social Change, Sociology of Work 
	and Industry, Social Stratification & Mobility.

Year 3  Sociological Theory II:  Contemporary Approaches, Project, 
	Religion & Philosophy Subjects.  Two of the following: 
	Demographic Analysis, The Sociology of Social Problems, Sex 
	Gender & Society, Ideologies & Social Movements, Human 
	Management & Organizational Analysis, Selected Topics in 
	Contemporary Sociology, Sociology of Marriage & the Family, 
	Population Studies, Political Sociology, Modernization & 
	Social Change, Sociology of Work and Industry, Social 
	Stratification & Mobility.  At least two of the following: 
	Population of China, Chinese Social Thought, Sociological 
	Issues in Rural & Urban Development, Chinese Family & 
	Kinship, Selected Topics in the Sociology of China.
