BSSc (HONS) IN COMMUNICATION ============================ Course Aims & Objectives ------------------------ The Bachelor of Social Sciences Degree with Honours in Communication involves full time study over three academic years and provides students with the opportunity to choose among six options: a) Applied Communication Studies, b) Broadcast Journalism*, c) Cinema and Television, d) Digital Graphic Communication, e) Journalism, and f) Public Relations and Advertising. The Journalism Option is offered in two concentrations, Chinese Journalism and English Journalism. The Communication Course is designed to develop each student’s potential for critical thinking and creative ability, in accordance with the University’s overall philosophy of “whole person” education. Objectives specific to the Communication Course are these: A. to provide students with understanding of communication and media in contemporary society. B. to educate students to be competent communication professionals. C. to help students to cultivate a proper sense of social consciousness and ethical responsibility. * The offering of Broadcast Journalism Option is subject to approval. Course Structure ---------------- The Communication Course consists of approximately 100 units of academic work distributed in four basic components: a) Complementary Studies; b) Non-Major Electives; c) Communication Core, Basic Professional Subjects and Communication Electives; and d) Option Studies, including honours project. Complementary Studies offers studies on computer literacy, Chinese communication, English communication, and religion and philosophy. Non-major Electives cover any non-Communication subjects as deemed appropriate by options for their students. Communication Core provides a broad overview on communication and a necessary context for the Option Studies. It covers subjects on language and communication, mass communication theory and communication research. Basic Professional Subjects lay an essential foundation for the verbal and visual communication skills such as photography, graphic communication, radio and television production, public speaking and newswriting needed by students. Communication Electives enable students to be educated broadly in the field of communication. Students may take subjects of other options. Option Studies Subjects teach students to become specialists in their chosen discipline. By the end of the third year, all students need to complete an honours project.
