MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE MAJOR ========================== Major Aims & Objectives ----------------------- The Mathematical Science Major is designed to provide a solid foundation in mathematical concepts with an aim toward developing logical thinking and analytical skills. Applications in industrial and commercial areas are stressed in the curriculum. In view of the widespread use of computing in industry and commerce, computational techniques are emphasized and employed when appropriate. Specifically, the objectives are: 1) To provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge in mathematics. 2) To provide students with breadth in their mathematical training to enable them to apply their mathematical skills to various career fields. 3) To provide students with an understanding of how to use their mathematics and computing knowledge in the modelling and simulation of real-world systems. Careers ------- As a result, this major provides a high degree of flexibility for graduates to select their future professional careers in different work sectors locally and to pursue postgraduate studies. Graduates may therefore enter careers in the fields of administration, computing, finance, research, sales and teaching. In addition, a significant number of them pursue further studies in local and overseas institutions. Major Curriculum ---------------- The subjects taken by students pursuing the Mathematical Science Major can be summarized as follows (some subjects are electives): Year 1 Mathematical Analysis, Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Computer Literacy, Structured Programming, Science Elective Subject, English Language, Religion & Philosophy. Year 2 Real and Complex Analysis, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, Operations Research, Partial Differential Equations, Simulation, Algebra, Graph Theory, Systems & Control Theory, Regression Analysis, Religion & Philosophy Year 3 Case Studies in Mathematical Modelling, Mathematical Science Project, Numerical Partial Differential Equations, Computational Physics, System Modelling, Quality Control, Digital Image Analysis, Topics in Operations Research, Stochastic Processes, Multivariate Analysis, Topics in Statistics, Life Insurance and Life Contingencies, Theoretical Numerical Analysis, Functional Analysis, Differential Geometry, Topology, Special Topics in Applied Mathematics. .
